چکیده

live long enough for a planned surgical procedure to be instituted. Up to 1961 only 21 successful pulmonary embolectomies had been reported in the world literature, but since the introduction of cardiopulmonary bypass by Sharp (1962) a large number of successful embolectomies have been reported from many centres (Beale and Cooley, 1965; Cross and Mowlem, 1967; Barraclough and Baimbridge, 1967). A new view of the natural history of the disease (Sautter et al., 1967) and the introduction of enzyme therapy (Sasahara et al., 1967) have diverted attention away from surgical treatment. Nevertheless, follow-up studies of patients treated for pulmonary embolism with streptokinase and heparin have shown that large areas of lung may remain underperfused one year later (Gunning, 1971). If these studies are substantiated the pendulum may once again swing in favour of surgical treatment, and when cardiopulmonary bypass is not available the possibility of bringing a flying squad from the nearest cardiothoracic surgical centre to the patient should be explored.

Arthroscopic treatment of synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder joint: case report and review

Abstract Two cases (20 and 15 years old) of shoulder joint synovial chondromatosis were initially treated with arthroscopic debridement. One was further treated with a second arthroscopy and partial synovectomy (case 1) the second was fully treated by arthroscopic surgery (case 2). The postoperative control X- ray revealed no loose body and the joint was normal. One of the cases (case 1) was a...

Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty for the Treatment Of Synovial Chondromatosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Synovial chondromatosis affecting the glenohumeral joint is rare. Treatment primarily consists of arthroscopic loose body removal and synovectomy. Shoulder arthroplasty has been mentioned in the literature as a treatment option for patients with coexisting arthritis, although the results have been underreported. The case of an 84-year-old man with long standing synovial chondromatosis of the sh...

Ultrasound imaging for the rheumatologist. I. Ultrasonography of the shoulder.

Ultrasonography (US) has proved to be a useful diagnostic tool in patients with shoulder pain and/or limited range of motion. It allows careful assessment of a wide range of changes involving many different anatomic structures of the shoulder girdle, such as the rotator cuff tendons (tendonitis, tendon tears and calcific deposits), the long head of the biceps tendon (tenosynovitis, tendonitis, ...
